Protecting the Back

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is the most important health concern in the breed. Reduce risk by keeping your dog lean, discouraging jumping on and off furniture, using ramps or steps, supporting the chest and hindquarters when lifting, and using a harness instead of a neck collar for walks.

• Lift with one hand under the chest and one supporting the rear.
• Add ramps to couches and beds before your puppy learns to jump.
• Limit stair use, especially downward, in puppies and seniors.
• Contact a vet immediately for sudden weakness, wobbling, or back pain.

Routine Veterinary Care

Your puppy will be on an age-appropriate vaccination and deworming schedule. Continue with your own veterinarian for boosters, parasite prevention, and an annual wellness exam throughout adulthood, moving to twice yearly in the senior years.

Eyes, Ears and Teeth

Check eyes for cloudiness or discharge, keep the drop ears clean and dry, and stay ahead of dental disease with regular brushing and professional cleanings. Small breeds are prone to tartar and early tooth loss without dental care.

Exercise Safely

Daily walks and sniffing games build fitness and core strength without spinal impact. Avoid repetitive high jumping, rough tug on the spine, and long stair sessions. Puppies should build duration gradually as their joints mature.

Lifespan

With good weight management, back care, and routine veterinary attention, Wire Haired Dachshunds commonly live 12 to 16 healthy, entertaining years.
