Feeding Your Wire Haired Dachshund
Lean body weight is the single best gift you can give a long-backed dog. Here is how we feed our puppies and what we recommend as they grow.
Puppy Feeding Schedule
- 8 to 12 weeks: four small meals per day
- 3 to 6 months: three meals per day
- 6 to 12 months: two to three meals per day
- Adults: two measured meals per day
Choosing a Food
Select a complete, balanced food formulated for small-breed puppies, with a named meat protein as the first ingredient and appropriate calcium levels for controlled growth. Your puppy will go home eating a specific food, and we will tell you exactly what that is so you can keep the diet consistent.
Transitioning to a New Food
Change food gradually over seven to ten days: 25% new food for three days, then 50%, then 75%, then a full switch. Sudden changes are the most common cause of loose stools in a new puppy.
Portions and Weight Management
Measure every meal rather than free feeding. You should be able to feel ribs easily under a thin layer of fat and see a visible waist from above. Even one or two extra pounds meaningfully increases spinal strain in a Dachshund, so treats should stay under about 10% of daily calories.
Foods to Avoid
- Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic and macadamia nuts
- Xylitol, found in sugar-free gum, peanut butter and baked goods
- Cooked bones, heavy table scraps and fatty trimmings
- Excessive dairy, which many dogs digest poorly
Water and Feeding Habits
Fresh water should always be available. Feed in a quiet spot, allow a rest period after meals before active play, and use slow feeders or puzzle bowls for enthusiastic eaters.
