Wire Haired Dachshund Grooming Guide

The wire coat is low shedding and practical, but it needs the right routine to keep its harsh texture, clean beard, and healthy skin.

Weekly Routine

• Brush two to three times a week with a slicker brush and a metal comb.
• Comb the beard and eyebrows after meals to prevent matting and staining.
• Check ears weekly and clean with a vet-approved solution when needed.
• Trim nails every three to four weeks, or when you hear them on the floor.
• Brush teeth several times a week to protect small, crowded jaws.

Hand-Stripping vs. Clipping

Hand-stripping removes dead outer hairs at the root and preserves the harsh, weather resistant texture and rich color the breed is known for. Most wire coats are stripped two to three times per year. Clipping is faster and perfectly acceptable for pet homes, but over time it softens the coat and can dull color. Many owners strip the body and lightly tidy the face, legs, and beard between sessions.

Bathing

Bathe roughly every six to eight weeks, or when genuinely dirty. Over-bathing softens the coat and dries the skin. Use a gentle dog shampoo, rinse thoroughly, and towel dry rather than blasting heat, which can also soften wire texture.

Beard and Eyebrow Care

The beard is charming and messy in equal measure. Wipe it after meals and water, comb it straight, and trim stray hairs so they do not fall into the eyes. Keeping the beard dry reduces odor and skin irritation.

Puppy Grooming Habits

Start grooming sessions in the first weeks at home, even before the coat needs work. Short, positive handling of paws, ears, face, and belly makes future stripping, nail trims, and vet exams dramatically easier for the rest of your dog’s life.
